Pump Tour 1990

Point Theatre

Dublin, Ireland

The Pump Tour saw Aerosmith continue its successful streak, on the heels of 1987's Permanent Vacation tour. By the end of the tour, Pump had sold four million copies.  The band's 1990 tour was notable as it saw Aerosmith's first return to Europe since 1977, as well as the band's first-ever performances in Australia.

Opening acts on this tour included Skid Row, Joan Jett, The Cult, Poison, Warrant, Metallica, The Black Crowes, and The Quireboys. Some of these acts were regular openers, while some opened for Aerosmith only at specific festivals or stadium shows.

Towards the end of the tour, A&R man John Kalodner stated that Aerosmith were "Maybe the biggest band in the world...Nobody else is this good right now."

David Bowie 1990 Interview

"Bowie specifically chose a smaller band for the tour, saying in a contemporary interview that 'It’s a much smaller sound. It’s not quite as orchestrated as any of the other tours. The plus of that is that there is a certain kind of drive and tightness that you get with that embryonic line-up, where everybody is totally reliant on the other two or three guys, so everybody gives a lot more'” (davidbowieworkd.nl)

Prince

The Nude Tour

Feljenoord Stadion

Rotterdam, Netherlands

At some point it was determined that Prince was going to make a stop on the Nude Tour at the Feijenoord Stadium, also known as De Kuip (The Tub). Ticket sales began selling on November 18th, 1989. The demand for tickets was so high a second show was announced that went on sale a week later.

THE NUDE TOUR INTRODUCTION

DAT Intro (Live)

Review of the Nude Tour:

“As the show’s codename implied, the music was the base of the show. Within that natural ambiance Prince seemed less shy and provocative...Simplicity’ is a relative term of course when it comes to Prince...Anyway, as mentioned before, his unpredictability and his unmistakable musical talent make Prince the most interesting and important of the current stadium stars...The question of you and Nothing compares to you were rare moments of peace and reflection during a sizzling show, that was built around familiar material...The start of the show, The future and 1999, sounded like a statement: a first glimpse of everything Prince has to offer in this last decade of the century. Quite a promise… this showdown was a somewhat clumsy gesture to the international press that had come in drones...With this modest means he regularly and effortlessly created goose bump results...He was lord and commander in the Feyenoord stadium. The audience adored him...The little man from Minneapolis is still a great musical force.”

Shortly before 1AM on 27 August, a helicopter carrying Vaughan and members of Clapton's crew crashed within seconds after takeoff, killing all instantly. With dense fog settling in, the helicopters began departing at 1 a.m. Jeff Brown, the pilot of Vaughan’s helicopter, banked sharply to the left about a half-mile after take off. The helicopter collided into a ski slope; everyone on board was killed instantly.  Jeff Brown, a veteran airplane pilot, had little experience operating a helicopter in inclement weather. In 1995 Jimmie and his mother Martha Vaughan sued Omniflight for negligence. The family was awarded an undisclosed sum.

Reports of the accident didn't begin surfacing until the morning when the helicopter failed to reach its destination of Meigs Field in Chicago. Shortly after 7 a.m. Jimmie was called to identify his brother’s body.
